Vocational Competence among Students in Vocational Colleges: A PLS-SEM Analysis of Learning Engagement, Vocational value, Career decisions, and Professional commitment in Shanxi Province

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a causal model of vocational competence among college students in Shanxi Province, China. A mixed-method design was adopted, combining quantitative data from 472 students from five vocational colleges with qualitative insights from interviews with teachers, graduates, and enterprise representatives. The Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) was used to test the measurement model and structural model, and content analysis was conducted on the qualitative data to explain the underlying mechanisms and provide suggestions. Trough strengthening behavioral participation and sustained learning motivation, deepening professional meaning-making and value internalization, enhancing self-awareness, reinforcing identity formation and long-term professional dedication.
